If I had to describe myself, it would be in a word that has many meanings with a complexity which falls off the tongue.
A word made up of many elements, is deceptive in appearance, and creates an illusion from the imagination.
My word would be Phantasmagoric. ~Summer Ross

Insecure Writers Support post

Hosted by Alex- click HERE
Insecure writer here. I've recently realized something.

I have a choice to make.

I see myself moving forward as an author. I have several pieces published, in my hometown I've been noticed by some important people, and I've completed a novel which I'm in the middle of editing. I've also volunteered as slush pile reader and have started with a small publishing company as an intern editor with a possible future job in editing if I do well.

Here is the scary part:
I'm at a point in my possible career where I can continue, grow and probably make a decent name for myself, or I can stop everything right now. Stop believing in my own dream, get a 'real' job and make an okay life for my family.

It's terrifying to not only know I have this choice, but to decide to risk a great deal and jump or back out and be safe.

I'm visiting from the IWSG.
I think you are at a crossroads... the path you decide to take will, in part, be determined by your character and how much you believe in yourself and your abilities...
Having said that, I also believe that gut instinct is the one to follow...
I wish you well in whatever you choose!

Just popping in from the IWSG :)

I am kind of at the same point hon. Well, I haven't had anything published, but I've been thinking recently, should I just go and get a proper job, put all this writing silliness behind me lol

People have been wagging their fingers at me and shouting "nooo, don't give up" lol....but I'm still not convinced I've got what it takes *sighs*

All I can say is (((((hugs))))) you are not alone. I could say to you, you should make blah blah choice, but, that's not my place. All I will say is follow your heart, I think, deep down, you'll know which choice is right :)

Good luck!

Xx

To me, that isn't even a choice. Dreams win every time. Sometimes the harder path ends up being the best. Just ask yourself this, when you die will regret the choice you made? Because to me giving up on this dream would mean giving up on life. Safe doesn't cut it if you really want to live.

Sorry to be so opinionated when we just met, but I have strong feelings about this :)

It's a tough old road no doubt, Summer. But if it's your dream, it's worth pursuing. Don't let fear and doubt get in your way. And, in my humble opinion, there's always a choice. Make the right one for you--and be happy.
I wish you well whatever you decide

I'm with Old Kitty - the only way to reach your goals is to keep moving forward!

All I can tell you, Summer, is that I've regretted the times I didn't jump.

If you have a passion, you should never give up on it.

Good Luck!

With all that happening, I'd say don't stop - take the risk!

I think the answer would be different for everyone. One thing I do know is if you have a passion for something, you will find a way to continue doing it, even if that means nights and weekends. I also know that being able to immerse yourself in your passion full time is awesome.

Hi, Summer!
I'm so glad you stopped by via IWSG today! Facing tough decisions when it comes to providing for your family must be extremely difficult, but honestly, my best advice is this: never give up your writing.

Our lives are lived in chapters, and as a mom, I understand the need to provide. But you've got to provide for your future, too! Taking the harder path now may be the key to having maybe not an easier path later, but a more fulfilling one. Never leave yourself to question, 'what-if?' Know you gave all you had! In that is the truest contentment.

All the best to you! I hope you'll keep me updated - I'll be cheering you on!

You seem to have built up a momentum with your writing. You might regret it if you give up on it now. Watch the video on my blog by Neil Gaiman - it might help sway you. :)

Yeah. Don't stop. Keep going.

That sounds like a very difficult decision to make. But I would also agree with Old Kitty--if it means enough to you, it's work pursuing.

I say jump or you will forever regret and wonder what could have been!

It is a tough decision that many writers face. I decided to take a leap of faith with the support of my husband. It's been a slow start, but so far quite positive.

Follow your gut, not necessarily your head and all will fall into place. The universe has a way of supporting our choices.

Hi Summer .. I too say don't stop - looks like things are falling into place and I'd definitely keep on keeping on ..

Very very good luck .. sounds quite the great time ahead .. cheers Hilary

Hi Summer, I'm a new follower via the IWSG. I'm left wondering, what's the point to quitting? What's the benefit? There's no upside at all. So why even consider it a choice? You are a writer and that's what you do, or at least part of it, and to throw it all away would be a waste of all the time and energy you've spent so far. Most writers have "real" jobs and writing is what we do on the side. It's a passion, not simply a hobby. There's no safety in quitting really. You'd be starting over from scratch. So keep fighting and be who you are. Why would you even consider anything else?

Since you have a choice, I say go for it. From what I learned, one always tends to regret not taking the opportunity later on down the road.

Therefore, I say go for it and pour yourself into it with all you have. Take no quarter and live to realize when you are successful that you made the right choice.

Cheers.

I put education first and guaranteed my professional career, now I have more freedom for writing but feel like I missed alot of time and could have developed more by now.

I say jump, there will always be real jobs out there, nothing worse than hating the day because you dont enjoy your job and wish you were somewhere else.
